INTOXICATION CHARGE

CONTRACTOR CONVICTED Charged with being intoxicated in charge of a motor vehicle, Mervyn Ericson Neuman appeared before Messrs. C. G. Lucas and C. H. Christensen, Justices of the Peace, on Tuesday morning. Accused, who was defended by Mr B. S. Barry, pleaded guilty. Sergeant Farrell said that accused had been found intoxicated in charge of a truck in the Strand on the previous night. He had been examined by a doctor and the fact that he was intoxicated confirmed. He was a young married man of good character and was part owner of a small sawmill at Otakiri.

Mr Barry said that it was Neuman’s first offence. He had not had many drinks and did not actually drive the vehicle; he had been in the process of getting in when arrested. His circumstances were not very good. Neuman’s driving license was essential to his work and he pleaded that it not be interfered with. He had learned a severe lesson and counsel did not think he was likely to appear before the court again.

The bench took into consideration the serious nature of the offence and convicted and fined the accused £25, the conviction to'be entered on his license. He was also ordered to pay medical expenses amounting to £1 Is.
