LORD MONTGOMERY

VISIT TO ROTORUA TUMULTUOUS WELCOME Described as the sincerest and most tumultuous welcome since the Duke of York’s visit in 1927 was the reception tendered Lord Montgomery on the occasion of his visit to Rotorua oil Monday. From 10.30 in the morning until he retired behind the doors of the Grand Hotel at 5 p.m. to the accompaniment of round upon round of cheers from the crowd “Monty” received the acclaim of the district as he attended four functions in his honour.

Members of the local bodies of surrounding towns were present, Mr B. S.. Barry (Mayor) and Mrs Barry representing Whakatane. Mr W. Sullivan, M.P. for the Bay of Plenty made a speech. Many speakers were heard by a crowd of between two and three thousand people including school children. A number of adults and children from Whakatane were present. Apart from those who travelled in private cars two bus loads of children were conveyed to the reception from this district. A large number of Maori children also attended the function.

During the course of the day the visitor was the recipient of several presentations including an illuminated address signed by Rotorua Borough and County Councilors, a mantle clock set in a carved frame and a lamp stand.
