EDGECUMBE’S FUTURE

DEVELOPMENT OF TOWNSHIP ALTERNATIVE SITE PLANNED Writing the Whakatane County Council at its meeting yesterday the Minister of Lands stated that with regard to the future development of the Edgecumbe township, the Department had been instructed^to enter into negotiations for the purchase of approximately 30 acres, adjoining the existing township for the provision of an alternative site.

The council decided to write the Minister asking how soon it was anticipated the negotiations in this direction would be completed in order that the council might be enabled to make representations for the erection of State houses which were urgently needed. “It seems strange,” commented Cr Luxton, “that the site • contemplated is the original one at Riverslea, where it was first intended to found the township.”
