HOCKEY
WHAKATANE v AUCKLAND COLTS LAST WEEK’S GAME Although it looked as if Whakatane would have the upper hand, after the first 10 minutes Auckland settled down and played hockey the proper way. Auckland’s superior combination and team understanding brought them an easy victory, but Whakatane’s players were too selfish and tried to keep the ball to themselves without passing it out. Thte teams were:—
Auckland Colts (black and white): Morris, Bock, Appleby, Smith, Thomas, Jeffery, Morton, Green well, McCarten, Emerali and Gordon. Whakatane (green and gold): Learning, Rigden, Kingi, Stoddart, Dodunski, Civil, Nuku, Corbett, Waller, Jensen and Arrol. When play commenced, the ball quickly went down to the Auckland 25 where it was saved by Emerali who started off'his forwards. Morris tried to goal but the Whakatane goalie Arrol, saved. Auckland again pressed, Bock shooting a flying ball that went over the bars. A bully was taken on the Whakatane 25 and Thomas, the Auckland left wing attempted to score but at a critical moment Waller, a Whakatane fullback, took the ball and sent it down to his left wing Dodunski who put in a brilliant run down the line, then centred to Stoddart who caught Gordon the goalie out of position and netted for the home team.
Whakatane 1, Auckland 0. From the bully Whakatane gained possession but the chance was spoiled by Civil giving sticks just outside the circle, McCarten took the free hit by passing to Norton but Norton was checked by Rigden. Auckland’s next try was saved by
Arrol who stopped the ball which hit him in the face. Play was stopped while he was attended to. Nuku started off his forwards but was stopped by Norton who passed out to Thomas who ran right through only to be stopped by Arrol. Stoddart figured for Whakatane and was checked by Gordon who set Auckland going. Jensen, Whakatane fullback, gave a great exhibition of stickwork saving Whakatane repeatedly. Dodunski gained the ball and went right from Whakatane 25 but, couldn’t pass the goalie. Appleby scored next for Auckland. I—l. Play after half-time was fairly one-sided, Auckland playing into the sun. Whakatane pressed < once more Rigden missing a goal narrowly. Appleby put in a good run and scored once more. Auckland 2, Whakatane 1. Arrol then put up a great fight against the five Auckland forwards and saved the situation repeatedly, but Smith found him out of position and netted for Auckland. Auckland 3, Whakatane 1. Whakatane made several determined efforts but McCarten proved too safe. Nuku and Stoddart passed him once but Stoddart gave sticks. The Auckland forwards were started again and about one minute before the final whistle Bock scored. Auckland 4, Whakatane 1. Players worthy of mention were: McCarten, Morris, Appleby and Norton for Auckland, and Arrol, Jensen, Waller, Nuku and Dodunski for the home team.
