SUBSIDY REMAINS
MAIZE MARKETING SACK PRICES FIXED The subsidy will remain the same this year at Is 6d per bushel, the graduated prices will be from 5s 6d to 6s 2d per bushel plus subsidy, and, in addition, the sacks-extra charge will be allowed on the basis of Is 4d as the maximum for a fullsized sack in good condition and others according to value. A statement to that effect was made following the annual meeting of the New Zealand Maize-Market-ing Committee conducted in Gisborne.
There was a full attendance at the meeting, members being present from Wellington, Auckland, Whakatane and Gisborne. The director of the Internal Marketing Division, Mr R. P. Fraser, presided. The objects of the committee wer© to allocate maize in the most equitable way to meet the needs of the poultry industry, which is still seriously short of local and imported feed. Better Allocations Possible “It is very pleasing to report that the acreage and yield this year in the Gisborne province is substantially increased, and this will be reflected in the better allocations made to merchants and mash manufacturers,” said Mr Fraser in a statement. “As in the case of last year, allocations were also made for green feed and human consumption. “This increase is due not only to the favourable growing season, but also to an increased yield as a result of the extended use of the Pfister variety, which has shown remarkably good results in the district.” • /
Expressions of appreciation were made by the committee at the good work of the Native Department, whose employees had planted substantial areas of maize throughout
the Gisborne, East Coast and Bay of Plenty districts. That had contributed very largely to the increased quantity of maize available for distribution this year. Before the close of the meeting, reference was made to the impending' departure chairman from the position as director of his division, and it was mentioned that it would probably be his last year as chairman of the committee. Opportunity was taken by the producer, merchant, and Government departmental representatives on the committee to present Mr Fraser with a token of the esteem in which lie was held. They said his guidance, in no small measure, had been responsible for the successful work and administration of the committee under difficult circumstances.
