NEW HIGH SCHOOL
REPORT PRESENTED HEADMASTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES \ Mr J, W. Wilson presented his report on the urgent need for a High School in Whakatane to the school committee on Monday. The report stressed the present and future responsibilities of the Headmaster with 830 pupils and about 30 teachers under his charge. Figures showing the growth in roll numbers and the estimated increase were also given: It was decided to obtain further figures on the increased population of Whakatane which, it was stated, was about the fifth largest in New Zealand. Distances The distances involved were also quoted. The infant department was half a mile away, the Ohope Side School five miles and a teacher at the hospital one mile combined to make the headmaster’s task more difficult. In the main ground there were no less than five buildings. It was realised that a new building could not be constructed right away, but the report suggested that a start should be made on the new primary school building and that this should be gradually added to. It was decided to forward the report to the Education Board with the request that provision should he made for a high school in Whakatane for the 1948 educational year.
