Boxing News At a meeting of the Whakatane Boxing Association held recently it was decided to hold the next open tournament in August. Messrs. Magee, Henry,' Hogg and Semmens were appointed selectors to choose Whakatane representatives for the Bay of Plenty championships to be held in Tauranga in July. “Save the Children” Appeal There was a splendid response to the “Save the Children” appeal of the Red Cross committee to Whakatane residents for clothes to be sent overseas. Parcels were collected on Friday by school pupils of the Whakatane District High School. Further collections are being made in the country, centres of the Whakatane district. It will be some weeks before the clothes are sorted, mended or cut down and packed for sending ' away.

Shipping News Concern for the safety of the “Toa” was felt by many as a result of rumours which have been going the rounds. The vessel is safe in port in Auckland but had a rough trip, taking from Monday to Friday to complete the voyage. The “Seagull” a vessel much the same in looks as the Haere which recently vanished without trace, took on a substantial sand ballast before her trip to Auckland. A large part of the sand spit at the entrance of the Whakatane harbour went with the flush of water following the recent rough weather. Search For Houses “Short of taking measures to compel owners of vacant houses to make them available for letting, I do not know of any other avenue which has not been explored in an endeavour to alleviate the housing position,” states the Minister of Rehabilitation. “The method of compulsion referred to has been used in Victoria and other Australian States, and in Canada and South Africa. The Government here is at present awaiting reports from those coutries as to how the legislation is working.”
