NEW BRIDGE FOR EDGECUMBE

THE persistent efforts of Rangitaiki Plains settlers and their elected representatives in urging the replacement of the wooden bridge over the Rangitaiki River at Edgecumbe look like being rewarded with success very soon. With characteristic directness, the Minister of Works has said that, this “temporary” bridge which has done good work for 27 years is “only standing up through force of habit,” It is good to know that only lack of steel and cement is preventing the Minister’s engineers from starting the job of building a modern bridge at Edgecumbe. If there are more urgent bridge-building jobs in other parts of New Zealand they must indeed be most urgent.
