PROMISE OF NEW WHAKATANE POST OFFICE

EVEN the most pessimistic resident of Whakatane town and district must have been cheered up by the promise, of the Minister of Works, expressed in most definite terms, that the long-deferred new post office for Whakatane would be on the Public Works Estimated this year and would be under construction in two years. As the Minister has shown in the past that he does not make rash promises iit seems ,that the end of the period of waiting for a new office is almost in sight. At this stage it is not out of place to congratulate the various local bodies and organisations which have by their vigorous representations succeeded in ensuring that the Whakatane Post Office has been given a high priority. The compliments paid by many speakers to the patience of the postal officials who have worked for so long under condi- ' tions that would not have been tolerated in normal times are fully deserved. However, local enthusiasm over the promise of the Minister of Works will be equalled by the district’s satisfaction when the foundation stone of the new building is actually laid and when some indication is given of when the new office will open for business.
