RUGBY FOOTBALL
WHAKATANE UNION GAMES PAROA SHAPING WELL Teams are settling down as the Rugby Union Club,.competitions were advanced a further stage last Saturday. Public support remains strong both at home and on the Plains, where the Rangitaiki games are developing along sound lines. In the Whakatane Domain the outstanding game was the senior fixture Paroa versus Poroporo. Last year’s champs tore off another victory and are settling down to spectacular football which was a delight to behold. Poroporo were somewhat unfortunate and the margin of points should not have been so great, were it not for the fact that Poroporo failed to follow up the numerous openings made by its splendid inner backs.
On No. 2 ground, United had a walkover victory against P.W.D. The game became so one sided that players lost all interest as the score soared to cricket proportions. P.W.D. as new comers should not be disheartened by their reverses. Every new club learns the hard way and Saturday’s gamje should supply added stimulous and determination to improve.
. United juniors were the leading team on the junior field. They are developing into a splendid little side and already show scientific qualifications which will make them hard to beat in the competition.
THE GAMES PAROA BEAT POROPORO Paroa and. Poroporo fought a battle in the senior grade. Paroa showed more finish and played a slightly better game than their adversaries. . The first score came after a lineout. Honana ran across the field and headed for the line. He retained possession of the ball and made no attempt to dodge opposing players but passed to Kriwana at the last minute. The kick missed.
Paroa 3, Poroporo 0.
