RESULTS AT A GLANCE WHAKATANE DISTRICT RESUL WHAKATANE DISTRICT RESULTS The following were results of the games played under the variojus winter codes in the Whakatane district over the weekend:- - RUGBY FOOTBALL WHAKATANE UNION ' ’ Seniors Paroa defeated Poroporo 19-6. United defeated P.W.D. 52-3. , > Juniors United defeated Wairaka 15-0. Poroporo beat Waimana 19-0. RAN GIT AIKI UNION Seniors Te Teko defeated Otakiri 8-6. Thornton drew with Matahina 8-8. Juniors Te Teko beat Thornton 17-0. Matata beat Otakiri 12-3. BASKETBALL Following are the results of Saturday’s draw:— Whakatane A 18 beat Matata A 15. Huimai 28 beat Matata B 6. Edgecumbe 9 beat Thornton United 5. Whakatane C 14 beat Taneatua 3. Paroa 21 beat Orini 10. Thornton 6 beat Poroporo 5. Whakatane B 23 beat Rangataua 6. HOCKEY North Men Rangers v Richmond 5-1. The Paroa backs received the ball from a scrum inside the half way on Poroporo territory. After a nice dive pass by the half-back the backs took the leather down in a fine exhibition of in-passing. Martin went over between the posts and Dodd converted. * Paroa 8, Poroporo 3. An example of cool thinking by their fullback gave Paroa the next three points. He took the ball outside his own 25 yard mterk, dodged three men and sent a perfect kick to within 5 yards of the line. R. Laurie was right there and forced the ball making the half-time score: Paroa 11, Poroporo 3. The Poroporo backs got away nicely from a scrum but were stopped and soon Paroa was streaking away in possession. ‘ Honana forced and Hohua converted. Paroa 16, Poroporo 3. Wharewera put in a long run to alter the score. He went over in the corner and received medical attention. He played on. Paroa 19, Poroporo 3. In the last few minutes of play Biddle took the ball on the halfway mark. He put in a high kick towards the Paroa goal line and followed through to score. The whistle went with the score: Paroa 19, Poroporo 6. Mr F. Peebles was referee.

UNITED’S DAY FIFTY-TWO POINT VICTORY P.W.D. showed up well from the kick-off but the whites appeared to have the edge on them as the game advanced. However in the very early stages H. Ratima from closein play slipped across to draw first blood. His try went unconverted. The White jerseys then proceeded to dominate the play keeping the ball well inside P.W.D.’s half. McGougan’s line-finders were a source of strength to United in pinning the reds down. Lack of understanding cost United certain points but a handy free kick by McGougan evened the points.

The next points came swiftly McGougan taking on the full and sprinting over to score in the corner. His conversion kick from) an acute angle was pretty to see. ' . United 8, P.W.D. 3. Almost immediately McGougan lobbed another penalty goal. A moment later Cave fed to McGougan who scored again and converted. United 16, P.W.D. 3. Scoring for United now became monotonous, McGougan notching another penalty kick. D. Stewart slipped through for an unconverted try making the score at half-time: United 22, P.W.D. 3. Points rattled on in the second half when McGougan outpaced the opposition to score once more and converted with an easy kick. He repeated the. performance from a short cut in but missed with the kick. Butler scored next for United after some ragged play. United 33, P.W.D. 3. Campbell found three points with a penalty kick and Cave sprinted through to touch down for an unconverted try. Campbell was next with a score .from a dribbling rush. United 42, P.W.D. .3.

Carey was next to score, McGougan converting. On the stroke of time De Lacey scored and converted making the final score: United 52, P.W.D. 3. Mr H. Mahy was referee.

JUNIOR GAMES UNITED DEFEATS WAIRAKA United defeated Wairaka by 15 points to nil in a very good game. Scorers for United were: Taylor, Henderson, Carling and Rutherford (2). Mr C. Wells was referee. POROPORO v WAIMANA The match between Waimana and Poroporo was characterised by very ragged play. The Poroporo wing, T. Trau, gave a good performance. The final score was: Poroporo 19, Waimana 0. Scorers were: Trau (3), T. Paul, Mokai. The remaining four points were made up by two conversions by Tiepa. Mr Brown was referee.
