SHOOTING SEASON
FIFTY-FOUR LIMIT BAGS RANGITAIKI PLAINS AREA Up till yesterday morning we learn from an official source that no less than 54 limit bags of grey duck were secured on the Rangitaiki within an area bounded by Matata, Edgecumbe and -Whakatane, since the opening of the season. This result may be considered as being very satisfactory.
The fine weather on the opening day was not conducive to big bags, but favoured shooters who were capable of hitting on the wing rather than those who relied upon the decoys to bring them sitting shots. The best results came from the inland lagoons near Thornton and lower Edgecumbe, where the birds werte found to be in uniformly good condition. It is the opinion of experienced sportsmen that the whole game position has deteriorated considerably over the past few years and that careful study of habits, nesting conditions, and the establishment of new sanctuaries will be necessary in order to rehabilitate the duck to anything approaching its past abundance. Shooting and Minors.
Under the law it is legal for a sixteen year old person to take out a shooting license and to possess a firearm for sporting purposes. There have been instances of boys under this age using shotguns in pursuit of game. In order to counteract this the Police have been issuing warnings through the country schools that prosecution will follow any youth under the age specified, who possesses or has used a firearm.
