HOLIDAY TRAFFIC VOLUME TYRE PROBLEM ACUTE The holiday period opened with bright sunshine and prospects of good weather. The traffic throughout the district was heavier than usual. Numerous caravans were drawn up on the many camping sites skirting the roadway betwen Murupara and Ruatahuna. At Waikaremoana campers almost filled the area and it was the busiest Easter for many years. It would appear that the tyre position is such that many motorists are still afraid to venture far. On some forty vehicles inspected only three were well shod, while the. majority were bad. One truck driver with a half-ton truck was so fed up of mending punctures that he filled the cover with grass, straw and rags. When last seen he was joyfully bumping his way on towards Waikaremoana after filling up at Ruatahuna.
Road Service cars were all fully laden on the Rotorua-Wairoa route. The number of cyclists through this area was not nearly as heavy as over the Xmas period when it was quite common to meet parties of four or five cyclists all heavily laden with camping gear trudging up some of the steep hills or sailing merrily flown them.
