NOISY CHILDREN
PERSISTENT HOSPITAL COMPLAINT LOCAL BOARD’S DIFFICULTIES When the new Women’s Ward was completed the Whakatane Hospital Board had every intention of relegating the children to the original Women’s Ward and thus make room in the Men’s Ward which is partly shared with the children for a greater number of patients. The unfortunate staff shortages however have made the plan impracticable and today the combined ward is persistently the main source of complaint in the institution. The Board has frequently debated the problem, which is aggravated by the fact that the old ward is now occupied by members of the nursing staff who, have no alternative accommodation elsewhere.
At yesterday’s meeting the matter was again introduced and members agreed that the main cause of complaints came from those patients in the men’s ward who, to use the expression of speakers invariably asked ‘that something be done about those bloomin’ kids.’ The chairman asked if the complaints centred round the child patients or visiting children.
Mr McCready: People have asked if there are any of them sick, they make such a noise. Some of the youngsters are even seen wandering round the street in their pyjamas. Where’s the supervision. Mr McGougan: We have to admit that we are up against it. The ward we intended for the children is now used by the nurses. If the children were by themselves there woujd not be half the trouble, but the question of whether they are fit or not to be in hospital rests with the superintendent.
The chairman (Mr J. Mullins) mentioned the period of convalescence which all patients went through. There was a vast difference between that period in a child and in an adult. Boards were everywhere working under difficulties. It took the local Board all its time to get staff, and even if they could get more there was no suitable place to put them. He like all members regretted the position but felt that little could be done about- it at present. ' ,
