WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WAIMANA BRANCH GRANDMAS' DAY The Waimana-Nukuhou Women's Institute held their April meeting last Wednesday in the Waimana Hall. Mrs Reuben Looney presided over a large gathering of members. The function took the form of Grandma's Day. The Grandmas .arranged the entertainment for the meeting which was greatly enjoyed by all. The "Ode to Friendship" was sung at the opening of the proceedings, followed by Mrs Fleming reading the The president then read the Dominion President's letter from "Home and Country-" The minutes and correspondence were then dealt with, and the remits for the coming annual council meeting were ' discussed and voted on. The delegates elected to attend the annual meeting in Opotiki were Mesdames Looney and Wylde. Two new members were welcomed, Mrs Stubbing and Miss Doreen Hughes. Mrs John Addison's letter was read by the secretary, and was full of interesting facts about the 'quake and tidal waves at Nuhaka. Mrs F. Savage thanked all members for their general help during her time as president, and also for the gift\of flowers sent her while absent from Nukuhou. A sketch entitled "Grandma's Day" was well presented by several Grandmas, the players being heartily applauded. A humorous Scotch reading was given by Mrs W. McConnell in the real Scotch tongue. A demonstration, the making of a cushion from left over pieces of material was given by Mrs F. Bell. The Grandmas were then presented with a floral shoulder spray each, the sprays being made by the gardening circle members.

The day's competitions were as follows: Best double bloom, Mrs H. Bell 1; Mrs F. Bell 2; Mrs King 3. Best single flower, Mrs H. Bell 1; Mrs Fleming 2; Mrs Hewitt 3. Thrift article: Mrs R. Looney 1; Mrs Mannion 2; Mrs F. Bell 3. Jar preserved peaches, Mrs Hewitt 1; Mrs I. Savage 2; Mrs Mortenson 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Hewitt 1; Mrs I. Savage 2; Miss F. Woolfield 3. An enjoyable afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, after which Mrs Looney thanked them and the judges, Mesdames J. Wardlaw and Martin. She also thanked the Grandmas for their delightful programme. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
