YOUNG FARMERS

INSTRUCTIVE FIELD BAY STOCK JUDGING COMPETITIONS An inter-district stock-judg-ing competition and demonstration was held on the farm of Mr J. Rae, Opouriao on Thursday, March 6. There was a fair attendance of local young farmers and a team of three representing Western Bay of Plenty competed against a team representing Eastern Bay of Plenty in judging Jersey cows. Western Bay in the persons of Bruce Vant, Tony Messop and Walter Marshal], all from the Paengaroa Y.F.C. defeated Eastern by a 'narrow margin. Eastern Bay was represented by Andrew McLean, George Murray and John Murray, all of the' Otakiri Young Farmers’ Club. The Wright, Stephenson Challenge Shield therefore remains in Western Bay of Plenty for another year. The adjudicator was Mr J. Rae, junior. After lunch which-was served in the shady grounds of Mr Rae’s residence, Mr L. Sisam gave a. short talk on the points to watch when purchasing a draught horse and demonstrated his points on a well-bred draught kindly loaned by Mr Downes. This was followed by general observations covering the points of a good riding hack and a cob, which had been specially brought along. As an interlude, both the light horses were asked to demonstrate their jumping ability over a handy hurdle. Mr A. F. Barwell, Supervisor of Bay of Plenty District Pig Council, demonstrated on Mr Eric Hill’s Large White boar, carefully going over the animal point by point. Pig judging score sheets were then distributed for each person to individually “point” the pig. Mr Colin Martin, Awakeri, was first, awarding exactly the same number of points as the demonstrator.

After a pleasant afternoon tea, again served in the shady grounds of the homestead, a hearty vote of thanks was moved by Mr G. Yeoman to Mr Rae, for his very willing assitance and co-operation and the same endorsed by Mr Bruce Vant on behalf of the visitors.
