SPEED RESTRICTIONS

TANEATUA TOWNSHIP Writing the Whakatane County Council the Chief Traffic Inspector for the Whakatane district advised that it was the council’s desire to extend the speed restrictions beyond its present boundary on the eastern side of the Taneatua township. It was considered that the sign should be moved out to a point eight chains south-west of the Taneatua Station Road. The restriction would then cover the full extent of the builtup area. The County Clerk reported that the proposed restriction would include the school. The council decided that if restrictions cannot be imposed from the intersection of Railway Road with the State Highway, that the offer of the Transport Department be accepted. In a further letter the Commissioner of Transport advised that the whole question of the 40 m.p.h. speed limit was under consideration. The stage had not yet been reached when advice could be given of what would be proposed. He would be glad to have the views of the council in order that these might be given full consideration. The council agreed that it be a recommendation to the Transport Department that the 40 m.p.h. speed restriction on other than sealed or concrete roads be maintained.
