DECISION TO WIND-UP

WELCOME HOME COMMITTEE DISPOSAL OF FUNDS The Whakatane Welcome Home Committee, an organisation created during the war years for the purpose of Farcwelling and Welcoming home troops from this town held its final meeting last Wednesday evening when it was decided to wind-up its activities and to lodge its existing funds amounting to £230 in the Post Office Savings Bank until such time as a. decision could be made as to their final use. In the absence of Mrs W. Sullivan, the president, Mr G. Otley took the chair. It was considered by members that the war in Europe being over nearly two years and that with Japan nearly eighteen months that there was no point in staging any further public functions. This was the general view of most of those present.

Mr T. Atkinson had strong views in the opposite direction, contending that those, men who had come back from Japan after fighting in Italy should be given the usual public reception and civic welcome as had been given the earlier detachments. A motion by him to this effect fo'und no seconder, and it was decided to adhere to the original intention of winding-up activities and to empower the secretary, Mr Rex Morpeth, to call a later meeting to decide what was to be done with funds in hand.
