SNOOKER TOURNAMENT

OFOTIKI RETAINS CUP A team from Whakatane endeavoured to lift the Billiards Ltd. Cup from. the holders recently, but the Opotiki team came out _on top with, four wins to two. Mr Snowy Howard had his seating capacity well filled by an enthusiastic crowd. The results were:— In the first heat Telephone Jack and Black Demon Hudson were partnered, but the former reared at the barrier and was badly left and practically took no part m the race. Red Ethyl Jacko and Insurance Thompson were next and they left to 'a good start with the former showing out a clear length after covering four furlongs. With half the journey covered they were racing neck and neck and it was not till the run to the judge that Ethyl asserted herself and ran home a 'winner. She steps a bit short, but once warmed up is hard to stop. Boniface, the big son of Baccus was drawn against Hohapata, and both looked in burly condition. They left to a good start, but Boniface was going well under a good hold and won rather easily at the . finish. Hurry Up Owie and Morgan’s Orchard came out rearing to go. Owie failed to begin well and lost ground at the start. He is not too sound and favours one leg. After half the journey was covered he started to improve his position, but his opponent left him again and half way down the straight held a good lead. At the distance, however, Owie wide out, put in his run and got up in the last stride to take the honours.

Bully Beef Joe and Irishman McGarvey was a one-sided race. Joe was badly left an practically took no part, and half way through was pulled up. He seems to be running out of his class. Gorse Bush Cookie and Hardcase Crapp left to an even start, but Cookie had too may prickles under his tail and forged to the front to win pulling up. This gave the Opotiki team their winning margin.— Opotiki News.
