Record Trout Landed A 12-pounder trout was caught at Lake Rotoma by Mr Jock Sunkel fishing from Mr E. Roger’s boat last Sunday. The fish, a beautiful Rainbow, is as far as we know a record for the lake and was classed by all who saw it as a perfect specimen. ' I Record Kingfish Landed The pride of landing a fortypound Kingfish from the Whakatane.' wharf last evening was the privilege of Mr E. Bryenton of Anzac Avenue. The fish which we understand is a record for the harbour had literally to be seen to be believed. Red Cross Gift Afternoon The Edgecumbe Red Cross members spent a very enjoyable afternoonon Wednesday 19th inst., at * the residence of Mrs J. Jespersen, who had organised a “gift” afternoon 'for one of the Red Cross members, Miss Joan Blair, in honour of her approaching marriage. I Scout Appeal Day The winners of the various competitions conducted by the local Scout organisation on the occasion of their field day last week were as under: Dinner, Mrs T. Food For Britain The value of coupons for rationed commodities handed in for cancellation at the Post Office, Whakatane, for the period 17th-22nd February, were as under: Sugar nil; tea nil; butter 3ilbs; meat £1 18s; fats 81bs. The total to date now is: Sugar 171bs; tea- 121bs; butter 215 lbs; meat £209 8s 3d. Harbour Board’s Finances At the February meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board the secretary reported that credit in the Harbour Fund Account was £2161 7s 4d and investments, National Security £IOOO and Liberty Loan £2500. With cash in hand and in transit less outstanding cheques, the Board’s credit was £5672 17s 9d. Of this apiount £2417 17s 5d was in the Endowment Account which under the Court Order was earmarked for capital works connected with reclamations and or acquisition of access to the Board’s endowments. The next instalment of interest amounting to £2005 was due on the 31st March. The rate receipt for the current year had not yet come, to hand.

Building and Constructional Works In a letter to the Whakatane Harbour Board, the Building Controller stated that under the Building Control Emergency Regulations 1939, all constructional works involving fhe use of building materials and including in addition to buildings, civil engineering projects such as road construction, wharves, maintenance works etc. regardless of whether it is undertaken by Government Departments, Local Bodies or private enterprise, come under the authority of the Building Controller appointed under the above Regulations and should not be commenced otherwise than in accordance with the approval of the Controller. The Board passed on the information to the consulting engineer.

Better Maternity Hospitals' “Maternity homes at present are poor and shabby ‘compared with school buildings, dental clinics and so on and this is a distinct deterrent in obtaining for the maternit3 r nurse or sister the status she should have.” This statement was made by Dr. Doris Gordon in discussing with representatives of Gisborne women’s organisations the need for better maternity homes in New Zealand and an improvement in the status of obstetrical nurses. Dr. Gordon, said it was plainly the duty of the women of New Zealand to foster the development of better maternity homes. Dr. Gordon said that £BO,OOO of the £IOO,OOO required for the endowment of a Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Auckland had already been collected according to latest advice and further sums were * waiting to be collected in the South ' Island.
