EAST COAST RAIL LINK

MINISTER PROMISES SURVEY UNDERTAKING RENEWED An assurance that as soon as surveying talent was available the survey of the northern rail link between Matawai and Taneatua would be undertaken, in accordance with the definite undertaking given by him to a deputation of Gisborne public organisations which waited on him in April last, was repeated in Wellington recently by the Minister of Works, Mr R. Semple, in an interview with Mr T. A. N. Corson, president of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, states the Gisborne Herald.

The interview took place during Mr Corson’s visit to Wellington, and Mr Semple’s assurance following further representations on behalf of the Gisborne Chamber.

The Minister .stated that he had had the matter in hand, but that the shortage of surveyors for many urgent works in various parts of the Dominion had made it impossible, up to the present, to allocate any trained men for the Matawai-Tane-atua survey job.

As soon as men could be made available the task would be undertaken, said Mr Semple. Private Surveyors Suggested

A suggestion that private surveyors might be employed in, the preliminary work was made by Mr Corson, w*ho stated that such assistance could probably be had in the Gisborne district. The Minister said that this suggestion might prove valuable, and he would take the first opportunity of consulting his Ministry of Works officers on the matter.

Replying to suggestions by Mr Corson that he should make an early visit to the Gisborne district, to discuss outstanding matters of public construction—and • more especially the highway and rail communications to the north—Mr Semple stated that he Rad not been able to come to the East Coast for some time, but that he had intended to do so at the earliest opportunity. In view of the representations made by Mr Corson he gave a definite undertaking that he would pay a visit to the district before the opening of the Parliamentary session.
