LOCAL SWIMMERS

VISIT TO TE PUKE WHAKATANE CLUB DOES WELL Last evening executive members of the Whakatane Amateur Swimming Club, accompanied by the speediest girl and boy swimmers paid a courtesy visit to Te Puke where the local club were holding a carnival.

The Whakatane officials gained valuable experience in competitive events and a bond of friendship and co-operative assistance was also forged. Whakatane was represented in the actual swimming events by Miss Doreen McLay and Master Jim Chadwick. Miss McLay won her heat in the junior girls 25 yards race and was narrowly defeated in the final—gaining second place jvith a time of 17 seconds. She also gained a further close score in the Ladies’ Open 50yds competing against swimmers from Te Puke and Tauranga.

Jim Chadwick was, third in the Intermediate Boys’ 50 yards; a win missed by time lost in turning. Miss McLay also entered for the Open Dive and put up a Very commendable performance considering the total lack of training facilities in Whakatane.
