FIREMEN’S SOCIAL
END-OF-YEAR GATHERING BOARD MEMBERS ATTEND A very happy and successful social function took place in the Fire Station recently when members of the local Brigade entertained members of the Whakatane Fire Board and also the recently formed Brigade now operating at the Paper Mills. Superintendent F. Stewart presided. The whole tenour of the gathering was' informal and friendly, and being the first of its kind was voted a success well worthy of perpetuating in the future. The work of the Brigade, stories and reminiscences were the keynotes of the speeches made by a number of speakers representing the three groups present. Superintendent Stewart made an excellent toastmaster and saw to it that no dull moments intervened. A number of warmly appreciated items were provided by Messrs. H. Hauesler, M. Burke and Fireman Bert Cottrell. The toast list was as under: ‘The £ing’ Superintendent Stewart; ‘United Fire Brigades Association’ Secretary A. Head and Mr F. Cutler; ‘The Fire Board’ Superintendent Stewart and Mr S. Shapley; ‘The Borough Council’ Deputy Superintendent Hurndell and Mr Drube; ‘The Whakatane Fire Brigade’ Mr F. W.
