ACCIDENT FATALITY
YOUNG MAN’S DEATH
GAR OVERTURNS NEAR OHOPE
A fatality in the early hours of Wednesday morning (New Year’s Day) occurred on the Ohope hill, near the first turn of the descent, when a young man, Edward Jackson 16 years, of Awakeri, met his death following the truck in which he was a passenger striking the bank and overturning.
The truck was a small one driven by Robert William Caulfield, and was returning with several other passengers to the beach. As they started to go down towards Ohope, another car with strong headlights, caught the truck in the glare and dazzled the driver, with the result that the vehicle struck the bank and overturned, pinning the deceased under the body. The driver of the other car is unknown.
When extricated, young Jackson was shockingly injured about the head and face. He was removed to hospital where he died shortly afterwards. Another passenger James Morgan, employed by deceased’s father, Mr E. Jackson of Awakeri, was also injured but not seriously, and is at present making good progress in hospital. An inquest for identification purposes was opened yesterday, before the District Coroner, Mr C. S. Armstrong, and adjourned sine die.
