EDGECUMBE’S FUTURE
ALTERNATIVE PLAN PROPOSED
PROTECTION BY STOP-BANK
A new plan for the safeguarding of Edgecumbe against flooding has been put forward for consideration by' the P.W.D. This, even though unofficial at the present time, makes for the erection of a protective stopbank as an alternative to the shifting of the township from its present site. ■ t
This, information was conveyed to the County Council at its meeting yesterday in response to its request for further details regarding the potential site of the subway approaching the town.. The letter stated that it was now recommended by the committee which recently visited Edgecumbe that a stop-bank be put around the township, and this bank would cross the roadway approximately where shown on the plan enclosed. It had been pointed out to the SurveyorGeneral, Wellington, that this would put a hump in the road which gave access to the Railway Station but so far there had been no reply to the comment made. It was suggested that the Council obtain further information from the local Lands and Survey Department (Drainage Branch) before attempting any further improvement to this road. In yiew of the new position the Council decided to hold over the tar-sealing of Station Road, Edgecumbe, in the meantime. “What I want to know,” observed Cr Hunter, “is if the Council is going to have any say in this new scheme for a surrounding stopbank?” The Chairman: I think we can safely wait until we get something definite from the department before considering that.
