A Piper And Politics
The question 'of whether or not the piper who fed the Prime Minister into the Opera House at a political meeting recently had the permission of the society to do so was raised at a meeting of the Manawatu Scottish Society: The assistant secretary (Mr F. Parkinson) advised that a 1 recent executive meeting of the Wellington-Hawke’s Bay Pipe Band Centre, which controls all pipe bands in that area, had made it clear that no band or'band members could participate in any . political meeting or function in the band uniform, and that also a rule was in operation in the Manawatu Society itself. The Chief of the Society (Mr V. J. Nicholson) stated that the piper who took part was not dressed in the Pipe Band uniform but was wearing Scottish dress' which belonged to the piper himself.. The pipes were also the property of the piper.
