LIQUOR OFFENCES
TWO MAORIS CHARGED
INCIDENTS AT TE TEKO In the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday, before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., two Maoris were charged in connection with liquor offences. Neither made an appearance. Tony Nathan was fined £2 with costs (35/6) for assisting in the commission of an offence, namely, supplying liquor to himself, a native. Richard Park, newly appointed Maori Warden at Te Teko, described how he had seen accused at Te Teko with a bottle of beer. He had endeavoured to take it, but accused had run away. Witness had chased and finally caught him, and accused, although he handed over the liquor, refused to state where he had obtained it. The other case concerned Moko Hunia, who was guilty of the same breach.
Sergeant Farrell described how he had accosted accused at Te Teko with six bottles of beer, although he could not find out where they had been obtained.
A fine of £2 with costs (35/-) was inflicted.
