MARCHING
ROTORUA COMPETITIONS LOCAL HONOURS GAINED The earnest attention which two groups of local girls have given to training during the past weeks, was rewarded last Saturday, when two Whakatane Girls’ Marching Teams succeeding in carrying off a number of the honours at the Inaugural Meeting and Marching Competitions, which took place at Arawa Park, Rotorua, during the weekend. A total of twelve teams from Hamilton, Rotorua and Whakatane took part. Given unexpectedly fine weather, the day’s activities were a marked success, and there was a large attendance of spectators. Prior to the main event, there was a street marching competition, for which special trophies were awarded. The uniforms, most of them in contrasting colours, were effective without being over-elaborate, and not a few had been designed with distinction. The. intricate marching course at the Park took ten minutes k) complete. The music was supplied by the Rotorua Caledonian Pipe Band, reinforced by two pipers each from Whakatane and Tauranga. The best available piece of the straight had been marked out for the marching course, and the going might have been described as ‘very fair.’. % A special address was given by the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, from the steps of the Ritz Hall in the afternoon. Mr Fraser’s visit to Rotorua, in the course of his tour of the Bay of Plenty coincided with the Competitions.
