BOOKMAKING CHARGE
MAORI BEFORE COURT FINE OF' £2O A fine of £2O was inflicted on a * Maori, Mac Nuku, who appeared before the Whakatane Court 1 last Monday on a charge oi’ bookmaking. Messrs. J. King and' J. E. Lovelock,. J.P.s were on the Bench. Sergeant Farrell stated that on the date in question, accused had been discovered in George Street, accepting small silver bets. His operations, however, were apparently very-small. He bore.a good character, - had served overseas, and was noW an employee of the Public Works Department. This was the firsts time he had been before the Court on any charge whatsoever. Asked if he had anything to say, accused who pleaded , guilty, told the pourt that he was sorry for his actions. Pie had not been operating for very long, and had made nothing Aut .of it. He admitted that he kne\v\ bookmaking to be an offence.
As Stated above, a minimum fine of £2O was inflicted, with seven, days' in whifch to pay.
