IN CHURCH CRYPT

REMAINS FOUND

THREE FAMOUS CONQUISTADORES

The remains of three famous conquistadores, missing' for 400 years, were discovered in a secret crypt of a church at Cuzco. They were Diego Almagro the Elder, conqueror of Chile and Peru, Diego Almargro, the Younger and Gonzalo Pizarro, a half-brother of Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru. The searchers followed leads contained in historical chronicles of the Incas.

The bodies were found garbed in regal robes, the richness of vestments and coffins reflecting their high rank.

All met violent deaths. Almagro the Elder, after conquering Chile, returned to Peru, defied Francisco Pizarro’s authority, was captured, garotted and his body beheaded publicly in 1538. The younger Almagro, aged 24, sought to avenge his father’s death by aiding in the assassination of Francisco Pizarro, but he was captured and decapitated in 1542.

Gonzalo Pizaro was executed in 1548, after taking over the governorship of Peru by force.
