LABOUR CAMPAIGN
MR R. BOORB'S MOVEMENTS
INTERESTED AWAKERI GATHERING
Mr J. Newdick (President of the Bay of Plenty (L.R.C.) presided over a meeting of some 90 electors in the Awakeri Hall when Mr R. Boord, the Labour candidate in the forthcoming election, addressed the residents. Mr Boord dealt with the achievements of the Government with special reference to farming, finance, rehabilitation and Social Security. He then went on to outline something of the Government’s proposals for the future in the field of housing, agriculture and education. “The. Opposition is attempting tcf make political capital out of the shortages which exist in the country,” said the candidate. “They have represented that the goods we need are being locked out of the country by import control. The true position is that there is a universal shortage of building materials and of clothing as a direct result of. the war.”
The members of the audience gave the candidate an attentive and uninterrupted hearing and at the close of the meeting a vote of thanks to the candidate and of confidence in the Government proposed by Mr J. Foubister Snr. and seconded by Mr L. Davis was carried unanimously.
Waimana Meeting
The Labour Party campaign in the Bay of Plenty electorate was furthered on Friday evening when Mr R. Boord addressed a gathering of Waimana residents in the local school. Mr R. Wardlaw presided over an attendance of more than 50 electors. The candidate confined his remarks mainly to the subjects of farming, rehabilitation and finance, stressing the' importance of what had been achieved in the last ten years and the plans that the present Government had for the future development of the country. The meeting gave the speaker an attentive hearing there being few interjections. Several questions in connection with farming policy, the guaranteed price future of stabilisation were answered.
At the conclusion of the meeting a vote of thanks to Mr Boord, proposed by Mr B. O. Heather and seconded by Mr A. McDonald, was carried by acclamation. Matahina Residents Over forty residents of Matahina gathered in the local school, when Mr R. Boord, Labour candidate for the Bay of Plenty electorate, addressed a meeting on Saturday evening.
The electors, presided over by Mr D. Taylor, gave the speaker an attentive and uninterrupted . hearing, while he made reference to the achievements of the Government and told of its plans for the future. Mr Boord drew particular attention to the Labour Government’s financial policy, to import control, stabilisation and to secondary industry. At the conclusion of the meeting questions in connection with Social Security and with secondary industry were answered. The meeting' closed with a vote of confidence in the speaker and in the Government proposed by Mr R. Stevens and seconded by Mr L. Walker being carried without dissent.
