Waste Paper Ablaze

The main waste paper store attached to the Whakatane Paper Mills caught fire just before 5 o’clock yesterday morning. Although there were some 700 tons of paper contained in the building, very little was damaged, the automatic sprinkler system holding the flames in check until the Mill Brigade, and later the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived. Due to the dense pall of smoke, fire fighters had a difficult task in locating the seat of the blaze, which took two hours to quech. Damage to the building, which . was composed of corrugated asbestos was only superficial. None of the electrical equipment or cranes installed were damaged. The building and contents were fully covered by insurance.
