YOUNG LAMBS KILLED

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

WAIMANA’S FARMER’S LOSS

The need to keep away from trees during thunderstorms was exemplified on Mr 1 G, Kirkbride’s property at Waimana recently. Two men who were moving out on horseback to muster ewes and lambs took temporary shelter from a shower of rain under the house verandah. Shortly they were startled by a thunder clap which sounded just like a single report of a shotgun and saw forked lightning strike near a rimu tree about 150 yards away. Examining the spot afterwards they found four well-grown lambs lying at the foot of the tree—three dead and one in a dazed condition—this one when assisted to its feet staggered away and’finally recovered. The only visible marks on the 25ft. tree were twelve feet from the ground where a narrow strip of bark was displaced extending towards the ground.and spreading out with just small chips displaced for a few feet about the ground.
