SUNDAY PICTURES
NO PERMIT IN WHAKATANE
COUNCIL’S FIRST STAND
There was no possible mistake in the tone and attitude of the Borough Council last Monday evening when an application for a permit to screen Sunday pictures from Messrs. Kerridge Theatres Ltd., was definitely declined.
The letter pointed out that the company hoped to institute a scheme for sending monthly food parcels (costing 18/9 each) to sister theatres in England. It -•was proposed to finance the scheme by means of Sunday screenings. ,
“As far as I am concerned it is definitely ‘out’,” said the Mayor. “I think we have a duty to the church people and also to the employees.” . The accompanying rejoinders of the Councillors were sufficient in themselves to indicate that the Mayor’s opinion was unanimously supported and the application was declined.
