OPENING DAY

WHAKATANE. TENNIS CLUB

SUCCESSFUL AFTERNOON

The opening of the newly-formed Whakatane Tennis Club which took place at the school tennis courts last Saturday afternoon, was a marked success, approximately 60 players including visitors from town and district clubs attending. Games took the form of a Yankee Tournament, the prizes, a pair of tennis balls for the lady winner, and cigarettes for the gentleman, being won by Mrs Lovelock and Mr Wylde. Despite the cold and blustery weather, the tournament was carried right through to the finals. Opening the season, the President, Mr P. Bryars stated that at present, expansion of the club was strictly limited, but next season, when it was hoped to have up to six courts ready for use, , matters would be on an entirely different footing. He commented on the number of members and erstwhile members present, and concluded by expressing the hope that the club’s success would continue to grow.

Afternoon tea was served by the ladies present, and was thoroughly enjoyed. A number of applications for membership were received. '
