“MOTHER-IN-LAW COUNTRY”

NEW NAME FOR BRITAIN

Canadians have a new name for the “Mother Country,” Britain. She is becoming known as the “Mother-in-law Country.” This is what Colonel Alan Chambers, overseas representative of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, said at Liverpool. “Six thousand Canadians are settling in England,” he said. “There will probably be many more, because we expect a lot of the 60,000 British brides to come back to England, thanks to the long arm of the mother-in-law.” Colonel Chambers was meeting officials who had arrived on the Mauretania to see what is being done for Canadian Service men who have married and settled down in Britain. Another arrival—back from a holiday in Canada —was Mr .A. E. Bryan, Canada’s senior trade commissioner to Britain, who said:*—“Our efforts to buy more in Britain are showing good results. “We want all the British manufactured goods we can get, especially textiles of all kinds, machinery and crockery.”
