REHABILITATION LOANS

NEARLY £28,000,000 UNTIL END OF SEPTEMBER

Although continuing to fall away from the record total established in July, rehabilitation loan authorisations for September reached £1,261,252 and brought total authorisations made until the end of that month to £27,968,155.

The latter amount represented advances to 36,077 ex-servicemen and women of the recent war, of whom 33,051 were men returned from overseas war theatres, 33 were returned servicewomen, 2611 were discharged home service personnel, 109 were ex-members of the Merchant Navy and 273 were widows and dependants of deceased servicemen. During September 1946 authorisations were made, all but 109 of these being to men returned from overseas. fvMfei Farms and Houses A further 153 loans approved during September were to establish exsei’vicemen on farms. This brought the total number assisted under this heading to 2975, as apart from those developing Crown sub-divi-sions with promise of a title or lease. The month’s advances represented £572,747 while approvals to date have brought the total value to £1,271,347. Housing loans also showed a decrease on the previous month’s figures. In all thei:e were 453 loans .authorised, 317 valued at £306,808 being for the purchase of existing dwellings and 136 valued at £192,790 being for the erection of new homes. This made the total to the end of September for housing 11,279 loans yalued at £12,880,922. Thel were divided as follows: 4037 valued at £5,641,630 for erection and 742 valued at £7,239,292 for purchase of existing dwellings.' Included in the total figures are 6411 interest-free supplementary loans to a value of £968,962 whoch are intended to bridge the gap between present and normal building prices. For ex-servicemen commencing in business 156 loans were authorised during September. They were valued at £114,744. The total of this class of loan is now 3924 valued at £2,201,940. Other financial assistance authorised during September was: Free-of-interest furniture loans 627 valued at £58,825 bringing up totals of 16,72 7and £1,537,857; and free-of-inter-est loans for tools of trade seven valued at £244, representing grand totals of 948 valued at £31,461. There were 61 miscellaneous advances authorised to a value of £15,094 bringing the totals under this head to 224 with a value of £44,628.
