War Memorials In Cathedral
An extension of the panelling of the War Memorial Chapel in the Christchurch Cathedral had been decided upon as the most suitable Cathedral memorial to those who fell in the last war, said Archbishop West-Watson to the Anglican Synod. The extension would cover space above the altar and "perhaps the vestry doors, and on the panelling would be carved the names of the fallen It was hoped to raise money by direct appeal and to plan the memorial in accordance with the amount received. Request for permission to erect memorial tablets in churches had been received by the faculties committee of the diocese. The actual wording of inscriptions on such tablets was important, and “should surely in some way be illuminated by faith arid hope of the Church.”
