Total values to date: Sugar 14 lbs.; tea 101bs.; butter 1491b5.; meat £153 2s Bd. October Rainfall Figures A total of 3.64 inches of rain was recorded at Edgecumbe during o*tober last. There were fourteen days on which rain fell, bringing the total fall for the year.to date to .5(2.64 inches. In October 1945, 3.06 inches of rain fell, making the average for the month over the past 11 years, .4.59 inches. Tennis Club Opening The opening day of the newlyformed Whakatane Tennis Clmb takes place on Saturday next at tfee High School courts, when all players interested are asked to - attend. The club shows every promise of becoming one of the most successful bodies in the town, and besides fulfilling its primary function as a sporting organisation, also offers a new. medium through which the social side may be developed. Debt Cases Judgment was entered for plaintiff in the following debt cases heard before Mf E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court last’ Tuesday: Philip E. Lynds v A. N. Priestly £9 Is 8d (costs £2 12s 9d); W. S. Woods v ~M. ‘Mitchell £4 16s (25/6); Cutlers Hardware v A. A. Kinley £26 15s (£4 3s 6d). Judgment summons: Joseph Lucas (N.Z. Ltd.) v Vernon H. Kemp £4 4s 6d in default 4 days; Shamrock Linen Company v V. H. Kemp £3B 9s. 6d, in default 30 days; Standard Trading Company v J. Tairua £4 18s 6d, in default 5 days.
Queensland Stamps To commemorate the centenary of exploration by Sir Thomas Mitchell in central Queensland, that Australian State has begun the issue to the public of three special stamps': a 2|-d red for domestic and Empire postage; a 3Jd blue for foreign postage; and a Is denomination in green. All are of the same design, the dominant feature of which is a portrait of Sir Thomas Mitchell superimposed in a map of Queensland, surrounded by a circular band lettered in white. “Centenary of Mitchell’s/ exploration of Central Queensland.’’ A river scene with sheep on the left and cattle on the right is at the base of the stamps, the design of which, is horizontal in arrangement. The stamps will be. on-issue for .three months, the usual term for such aar issue.
