“LOVE IN IDLENESS”

If the sustained and continued laughter during the recent season at His Majesty’s Theatre, Auckland, can be taken as a criterion, then local theatregoers can look forward to an excellent show at the Grand Theatre tonight, when Whitehall Productions (London and Australia) presents Terence Rattigan’s comedy success, “Love In Idleness.” Broadway, New York, gave a warm welcome to that famous acting team, Alfred Lunt and Lyn Fontanne, who have been playing in this comedy, under the title of “O Mistress Mine” since 1944—first in London during the buzz bomb attacks, then on to Broadway, New York, where it is enjoying a record run. The cast for New Zealand is headed by those eminent London artists, Kathleen Robinson, Richard Parry and Minnie Love. The box plain is at Armstrong’s.

TRANSPORT BREACHES

MOTORISTS IN COURT

NO WARRANTS OF FITNESS

The usual list of traffic offenders came before. Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court sitting on Tuesday. The charges were brought both by the Transport Department and by the County Traffic Inspector. For operating a car on the Roto-rua-Whakatane State Highway on August 2 without the requisite W.O.F. Joseph Dodd was fined 10s and costs 18s.

A similar charge cost Little Motohuri Hall a fine of 10s and costs amounting to 30s. Walter Herbert Semmens (Mr Barry) pleaded guilty to operating without a W.O.F. one of his lorries, which also failed to display the regulation vehicle authority. Mr Barry explained that he had recently purchased the truck from the County Council and had understood it to have the necessary warrant of fitness. It however required a special W.O.F. in order to operate under a private license. A little innocent confusion had arisen. Defendant was fined 20s and costs 10s oh the first two charges, and ordered to pay costs alone on the third.

Leo Simpson who exceeded the regulation 40 m.p.h. was checked by Inspector Sharpe at 55 m.p.h. When finally accosted defendant is alleged to have declared the Inspector’s speedometer to be wrong in that he was actually doing 66 m.p.h. Defendant had been in court before on a similar charge. Fined £5 and costs 10s.,

Henry Dawson Tocker whose car tail-light was not operating on July 26 last was fined 10s and costs 10s.

The County Traffic Inspector proceeded against Magnus McLean who was unable to produce his W.O.F. when accosted at Ruatahuna on August 14 last. Fined 10s and costs 365.
