YOUNG MAORI KILLED
THROWN FROM MOVING TRUCK ACCIDENT AT POROPORO \~ ■ A serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon, at 2 p.m. when a 23 year old Maori, Ranata Hohapata was killed as the result of being thrown off the back of a light truck, into an oncoming car, at the first corner on the Whaltatane side of the Poroporo Store. Deceased was riding on the tray of the vehicle in company with three other Maoris, Barney RansfieM, Koro Aukaha, and a returned soldier from Opotiki. The driver of the vehicle was Pinto Wahapanga whilst there was also a passenger in the cab.
When the truck was negotiating the corner, the four Maoris on the rear were all thrown off. Hohapata landed in the path of an approaching car belonging to Mr N. Martin of James Street, and driven ,-by his wife. The car had almost stopped when it reached him;
Of the three others, Barney Ransfield and Koro Aukaha were admitted to the Whalcatane Public Hospital, where their condition today is reported to be satisfactory. The soldier, who was to catch a bus for Opotiki was unhurt.
