CRICKET UMPIRES WANT MORE PAY
Although their pre-war rates of £lO 10s for a weekend game and £9 10s for a mid-week have been increased to £l3 and £l2 respectively, English cricket umpires still want more pay. They point out that rail fares and hotel bills are higher, while pay-as-you-earn taxation takes anything from £2 to £4 from their fees. For instance, a Test umpire is paid £22 10s for a match, but after taxation he is left with about £l4 10s. Some umpires even slept in railway carriages and pavilions.
