HILLCREST SANATORIUM

OPPOSITION TO SITE COUNCIL RENEWS PROTEST At its last meeting, the Whakatane County Council decided to again support the Matamata County Council in its continued representations to the Minister of Health protesting against the proposal to establish a tuberculosis sanatorium at Hillcrest.

The Council was in receipt of a letter from the Matamata County Council stating that public opinion was very strongly supporting the criticism which had been directed against the project, but unless the objecting Local Bodies renewed their oposition, the sanatorium would very likely be erected at the Hillcrest site.

A feature which had hitherto not been given prominence was the fact that Hillcrest was not noted for good drainage, and sewerage disposal from residential areas was already causing concern. It was understood, concluded the letter, that the matter had been referred back to the sub-committee appointed to select the site but it was feared that no alteration of its original decision would be made. As stated above, the Council decided to support Matamata, and to accordingly make further representations to the Minister of Health.
