PARATA CUP MATCH

WHAKATANE REGAINS TROPHY

Playing at Opotiki the Whakatane Third Grade representative team regained the Parata Cup by defeating Opotiki 6—o last Saturday. The Whakatane team showed the benefit of its practice games the previous two Saturdays, and players both back arid forward combined well. The local lads attacked strongly from the kick-off, and compelled Opotiki to force three times in the first few minutes. Then Cameron took the ball smartly from a defensive kick by Opotiki, made a determined run to score near the touch line. Whakatane kept up the pressure until half-time. For the first half of the second spell Opotiki were on the attack, but Whakatane’s defence held,, and play was sent back to Opotiki’s twenty-five. From a passing rush Wano came round to make an extra man after most of the backs had handled, and although brought down just managed to reach the goal line for a try. The Whakatane team retained the initiative, and were on attack when time was called. In the Whakatane team Goodwin was the soundest back, with the three-quarters Coker and Seeker backing up well. McGarvey at fullback also played a very sound game. Of the forwards L. Goodall, Chadwick, Cameron and Manuel showed up well.
