SOW HELD UP EIGHT COUNTIES

Sally, a sow owned by Mr Roy Gooding, of Bathampton, in Somerset, developed foot-and-mouth disease.

And Sally’s sickness mobilised the police of eight counties who went into action in the early morning hours to stop farmers taking £40,000 worth of livestock to the North Somerset Agricultural Show, near Bristol.

Bathampton is within 15 miles of the showground at Ashton Court, and a “standstill” covering the area was imposed. The show, the 92nd organised by the society and the first for seven years, had attracted 233 entries in the cattle, sheep and pig classes. Only horses could be shown. Mr G. Hunt, secretary of . 'the show, said: “As soon as I was told of the ban I gave a list of exhibitors to the police, and they put through phone calls.” . • ■ - Police also patrolled all roads in the neighbourhood and'turned back lorries containing livestock. Guards at the showground watched for farmers who arrived in ignorance of the ban.
