SEED MAIZE
GOVERNMENT APPROVED TYPE AMPLE SUPPLIES The use of Government Approved Seed Maize is advocated by the local Fields Inspector, Mr E. R. Marryatt. He states that the Department of Agriculture has interested itself in the reselection of a line of seed maize produced originally from imported seed of Pfister Hybrid maize No. 360. This type of maize has given very pleasing results in Poverty Bay district, and has been sown on an extended acreage each season. Owing to cross-pollination from outside sources some lines of this type have become very mixed, but where crops have been maintained in reasonable isolation, the type has been well maintained and good yields are being experienced. Realising the importance of this type in increasing production if good seed stocks could be assured, the Department of Agriculture in 1945 made a cob-selection from the best line of this type which could be located. The seed so obtained was sown under contract to the Department in an area selected to ensure adequate isolation, while the crop itself and the cobs harvested therefrom have been carefully watched to ensure trueness to type. The resultant seed is now available for distribution, after machine-dressing, as “Government Approved Seed Maize.” Order Now Orders for this seed should be placed as soon as possible with your seed merchant, and it will then be available whenever your land will be ready for planting. The seed is supplied in sealed sacks of three bushel and one bushel capacity. Ample supplies are available, but be sure to place your order early.
