WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MATATA MEETING The July meeting of the Matata Women’s Institute was held on the 17th being a week earlier than usual on account of delegates being absent at the Dominion Conference. The meeting opened in the usual manner, several apologies for absence being received. The Golden Thread, read by Mrs McGill, was a very interesting chapter from “Pioneer Tales.” The roll call, “Bulb Culture” was well responded to and members learned quite a few hints on this subject. Mrs H. Withy went to a lot of work in preparing a bed quilt padded with sheep’s wool which she had teased until it was very soft. She, demonstrated how she had filled the sections of the quilt using a small dowl to push the wool into the corners. Members showed a keen interest and although Mrs Withy explained it took some time to complete the quilt, she felt sure it was well worth while.'

The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

Competition results were as follows: Best flower, Mrs H. Withy 1; Mrs Taylor 2; Mi’s Magee 3. Best vegetable, Mrs H. Withy 1; Mrs Conn 2; Mrs Taylor 3. Spring bulbs, Mrs Smith 1; Miss Burt 2. Ginger bread, Mrs Reichardt 1; Mrs Withy 2; Mrs Conn 3.
