YOUNG FARMERS
THORNTON CLUB’S ACTIVITIES
At the June meeting of the Thornton Young Farmers’ Club Mr S. Barwell, Supervisor for the Bay of Plenty Pig Council, spoke on the formation of a Pig Club in the district. Mr Barwell also gave a lecture on different types of flooring for pig sties also sawdust concrete and modern sleeping quarters for pigs.
During June members of the club paid a visit to the Whakatane Paper Mills where a very interesting afternoon was Spent.
At the July meeting Mr G. I. Horne of R. B. Swann and Co. Taxation Service gave a lecture on Farm Book-keeping. A field day was also .held at Mr G. W. Mexted’s property where Mr Hume, Orchard.lnstructor Department of Agriculture, Tauranga, gave a very interesting lecture and demonstration on pruning, grafting, budding and general orchard work. This field day was held in conjunction with the Gardening Circle of the Thornton Women’s Institute and local farmers. There were 29 people present.
A dance was held recently to farewell sharemilkers leaving the district, and during July a dance was held to welcome to the district sharemilkers and farm labourers new to the Thornton community. The local Y.F.C. has accepted a challenge from the Otakiri Y.F.C. to a game of football.
The next monthly meeting will be held on Monday, August 5 when Mr E. R. Marryatt will give a lantern lecture.
