BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS
A HEAVY COUNTY LIABILITY MUST BE MET IN FUTURE A significant statement by the Coimty Clerk (Mr C. G. Lucas) at the July meeting of the Whakatane County Council was that the Council must soon face up to the heavy responsibility of replacing bridges which must incur a major expense. The new Whirinaki bridge was estimated to cost £IO,OOO (with Government subsidy of £5,000); the Taneatua bridge was estimated to cost from £16,18,000 (£B-9000) In view of the fact that a penny rate produced only £4OOO, the Council should realise what lay ahead by way of these two expenses alone of approximately £14,000. Mr Lucas further pointed out that since the abnormal flood damage two years ago, the General Roading Account had dropped from £II,OOO to £IOOO.
