NEW POST OFFICE

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ENQUIRY NO IMMEDIATE PROSPECTS In response to its recent letter to the Postmaster-General enquiring the prospects of the new Post Office building for Whakatane, the following communication has been received per Mr W. Sullivan M.P.:—

“In reference to your telegram of the 22nd July regarding the proposed new post office building at Whakatane: there has been no change in the position since you and the Town Clerk were written to on the 16th November last. In this connection it was stated that my Department was deeply sensible of the need for a new post office building at Whakatane and that the project has been accorded a high priority in the Department’s building programme. “Owing to the greater needs of housing, hospitals and other urgent requirements the amount of building construction for post offices and other normal Government services has had to be severely curtailed. It is hoped, however, that it may be possible to provide for the inclusion of the Whakatane building in the Post Office building programme for the next financial year. I can assure you that so far as my Department is concerned there will be no avoidable delay in the erection of the building in its due relative order of priority. “In the meantime, the preparation of the plans is in the hands of the Public Works Department.”
